2023 was our first FULL year post-Roe and even so, we still accomplished more than we dreamed of doing this year!
Long/short: abortion is illegal in Alabama, and we are unable to assist abortion seekers access legal out of state care while we await the results of our lawsuit against Alabama’s Attorney General. That puts us in the unique position of being the ONLY abortion fund in the country currently facing those legal barriers and that’s why we’ve pivoted in our programming and our focus. Our post-Roe mission is clear: expand our community education, get preventative supplies to those who don’t want to become pregnant, and serve those who are continuing their pregnancies and who are already parents.
Here’s a recap of some highlights from this year – highlights made possible through grassroots support from folks like you:
- Filed a lawsuit against Alabama’s Attorney General to fight for our right to fund legal abortions out of state
- Hosted our first ever Catalysts for Reproductive Justice Fellowship
- Toured the state in our new mobile unit: the Repro Raven bus
- Hired Frances Wallace as our Digital Organizer
- Featured in national and local media such as: NY Times, CNN, Prism, Ali Velshi, Rolling Stone, Washington Post, AP News, The Hill, Cosmo, Forbes, Alabama Political Reporter, Alabama Reflector, & countless others
- Subgranted $345,000 to values-aligned grassroots orgs doing work at the intersections of Reproductive Justice in Alabama, including $100k to the Alabama Birth Center to support maternal health care in our state
- Assisted with over $7k towards legal costs for clients who’ve been criminalized for their pregnancy outcomes
- Opposed the abortion homicide bill and supported a bill to repeal an old law that could be used to criminalize abortion seekers
- Shipped and distributed 9500 doses of Emergency Contraception (aka Plan B or the “morning after pill”) to residents of AL, MS, and the FL panhandle
We want to extend our deepest gratitude because we can’t do this work without YOU and your ongoing dedication to promoting Reproductive Justice in the South.
Wishing you a happy and healthy new year on behalf of all of us at Yellowhammer Fund:
